The Brief
RPM was approached by Berkhamstead Preparatory School to build a new collannade to complete the front of the Prep school. This area is used by parents to wait for their children at the end of the day and previously there had been no protection against the elements.
The Work
The original block paving and steps were removed and brought down to the new entrance level. Seven piers were erected and topped with brick arches. The timber roof was pitched with trusses, finished with welsh blue slate and seamless alluminum guttering to match the existing. We are most proud of the floor and ceiling finishes within the colannade. The Douglas fir timber ceiling with exposed beams and tongue and groove boarding is elegantly finished with a concealed connection design that avoids displaying any fittings. This was complimented with the smooth resin floor floated to a perfect finish. The works were completed over the 6 week summer holidays and finished 4 days ahead of schedule.
The Result
We are very pleased with the finished aesthetic of the work and would like to thank Berkhamstead Schools for appointing us for what became a very enjoyable job for the RPM team.
